unlike the rest of the country, california has been blessed with some truly spectacular weather this past week. sunday, for example, was 8o degrees and sunny. in february. so glorious and yet so bizarre at the same time. obviously with weather like that i have zero need for snow boots, but if i was still a chicago girl it is an absolute certainty that i would have upgraded from the fugly tretorn boots of yore to these adorable duck boots.

well hello again. i've got the usual excuses for my disappearing act: new job, shopping ban, uninspired, blah blah blah. but i'm back! and here's what i've been taking note of during our radio silence:

the blogger baby boom is reaching epic status. all these rad new baby mamas have me bookmarking amazing textiles and mobiles and toys, despite the fact that my uterus is strictly off limits for many years to come.

sara + hugh's wedding simply reinforced my absolute obsession with all things ace palm springs. that their guests wound up in the pool, clothes and all, was just too perfect.

i need one of everything from scout + catalogue. seriously. all of it.

speaking of wants, it goes without saying that i want a good, old fashioned shopping spree like you wouldn't believe. i'd start with getting every item needed to recreate this look, in it's entirety. *love* it.

there, i think that brings us up to speed nicely! hopefully i can swing by here with some goodies a bit more frequently in 2011. how's that for a resolution?

it may be that the past year of california living has damaged my ability to tolerate "chilly" temperatures, but it feels like the weather here in sf has been much colder than this time last year, which has me staring into my closet trying to conjure up a coat that isn't chicago-in-january heavy, but also not a san-francisco-in-july lightweight either. hence my recent fixation on army parkas. since h&m's $40 version failed to come through for me, i've moved on to eyeing this (slightly less budget friendly but no less fabulous) number.

since we've already covered my wants wishlist, now it's time to focus on the items i wish i was gifting to my family this year...

for my mom, a girls trip to calistoga springs, for some fancy spa treatments (mud bath!) and a relaxing soak in the olympic sized mineral pool.

for my dad, a bottle of the most amazing wine and a luxe traveler bag, so he can pound out those business trip miles in style. and then drink like a champ when he finally gets home.

for my little sister, pretty much any outfit from crew cuts. i swear i need an extra job just for all the clothing i want to buy for that girl.

for the Boy, a super functional ipad travel case. poor guy tried to watch a movie on our last flight on his ipad, and he had to keep trying to prop it up at just the right angle. this would fix that issue right quick.

and for my brother, a trip to the barber for a hot shave and a cut. he's much more interested in studying for his calculus class and playing call of duty than paying any attention fancy grooming, but that's why big sisters were invented anyway.

annnnnd we're finally at the last of it! my last few frames were saved for our jaunt down to arata's pumpkin farm. the coastal fog, corn field, epic hay maze and haunted barn were so perfectly fall, it was definitely worth the trek down to half moon bay. although the experience did teach us to never trust sydney's navigational skills, no matter how confidently she tried to sell them on us. girl can not get you out of a 2 acre labyrinth of hay. you's on your own with that.

the last family to visit us this month were my dad and little sister, sydney. they were in town for what felt like all of 15 minutes, but we managed to squeeze plenty of northern california fun in for these arizona peeps, starting with an afternoon at baker beach and a tour of alcatraz. i proved yet again that my meal planning skillz are never to be questioned after a trip to molinari deli for post prison sandwiches. i think my dad was pretty heartbroken that syd ate all of hers, since he's famous for never ordering enough food for himself, and instead relying on us kids not cleaning our plates. lesson learned for next time, ey dad?

i was able to enjoy a sunny, quiet morning at home a few days back, which included some quality time with the new issue of lines and shapes. i can't even begin to describe to you how badly i'm yearning for a trip back to brooklyn now.

p.s. that's da weez up there, in Her Spot. i'm not even sure how i managed to get a picture of the bed without her on it. seriously, the lady hardly ever leaves it. must have been a photo miracle.

on the last day of my mom's visit we enjoyed a ridiculously delicious (and boozy) brunch at foreign cinema, and then hiked it all off climbing telegraph hill and taking in the views from coit tower. i'm glad we got a chance to show my mom a few parts of the city that she hadn't been able to experience before, and i'm already impatiently awaiting her next trip.

october was indeed a very worthy film month, packed with travel and family as it was. the first event to document was my mom's visit to the city, only her 2nd trip out since we've lived here. we kept her on her toes (literally, the poor woman probably thought we'd never stop walking) with all kinds of activities, the first of which involved heading north to grab lunch at the ultra quaint pelican inn, which was followed up with a mini hike around muir beach and lots of dolphin watching.

i've been having one hell of a time getting excited about the 2011 calendars that have been popping up with increasing frequency lately, and i'm pretty sure that's because i love my 2010 cats let nothing darken their roar one so much that all others just pale in comparison. i want to branch out and try something new (variety is the spice of life, yada yada yada) but when i got the email letting me know that their 2011 one is available... well, i got the first omg it must be mine! urge of the season. i'm thinking this is a sign that if it ain't broke, don't be tryin' to fix it.

(and yes, i realize how incredibly first world problem this is. "oh my, i can't find a register of the days in a month that i like. wahhhh." but hey, you write what you know.)

missing my vanity

the selby's latest has me pining for my old vanity, which was a victim of the Great Cohabitation of 2007 - it simply wouldn't fit into the Boy's studio. mine was an art deco number in fantastic shape, and it still gives me physical pain to think back on leaving it behind at goodwill. there's just something nice about sitting down at a pretty, dedicated piece of furniture to put your face on, as my nana would say. a bit of femininity in an otherwise tedious chore i suppose. i'm definitely adding a vanity onto the List of Things To Get Once We Have Space.

this month the Boy and i celebrated our 4 year anniversary, and we took ourselves out for (many... oh so many) drinks to celebrate. towards the start of our love/booze fest i noticed that our footwear was very un-vegetarian of us, and the Boy noticed that the sun was bouncing off my face in a purty way. our respective alma maters played each other, and his won. i used a free afternoon to check out the musee mecanique, where creepy fun wonders abounded. and lastly we have one uncommon san francisco sight (clean-ish, empty muni) and one more common (steep hills, a bridge, and colorful trees).

i'm hoping to keep shooting at least one roll per month, and october should provide more than ample photo ops. weddings, birthdays, family visits, oh my. we are going to be busy.

and it is going to be awesome.

three cheers to brieanne, for bringing this most excellent product to my attention: the bike shelf. we have lots of bikes in our family, and for the longest time we were stuck with them gathering dust in the garage (before we got rid of the car), or tripping over them in our teeny hallway, or not being able to open the oven without knocking one over in the kitchen. the bike rack options that we knew about simply did not jive with our space, either aesthetically or logistically. this baby, on the other hand, would work nicely. maybe not in this apartment, but most certainly in the next. (yeah, we're already thinking about moving. eesh.)

i believe i may have mentioned something here a while back about getting a film camera during a trip to see the fam in denver last summer. well i did, and i also managed to shoot a few rolls with it. however it wasn't until just this week that i got around to sending them off to be processed and scanned. bad, film shooter! bad! anyhoo, now that i have confirmation that the camera does indeed work, and seeing as how i have a stockpile of fresh rolls of film, i'm aiming to be a bit more diligent about bringing the camera out and about more often. and processing them in less than a year, of course.

all told i shot four rolls over the past year, and i thought i'd share a few of my favorites here with you. i'll kick things off with this past weekend, when the Boy and i were able to enjoy a low key, blessedly uneventful weekend in the city together. a trip to the ferry building farmer's market, old fashioned cupcakes, puppy sitting, just a wee bit of boutique hopping (i bought two striped tops!), and just generally stalking about the mission pretty much sums up our wonderful weekend.

i've been very lucky that my career has not consisted of many jobs that have ever required a distinct "work" wardrobe. not many suits, or polyester blend pants, or pinstripes have ever been necessary. for this i am very, very thankful.

most jobs have, however, required just a wee bit of wardrobe tweaking for practical purposes. my newest professional pursuit (bookbinder) has a very loose dress code, but I do need to account for a few things when getting dressed:

-i ride my bike to and fro (no skirts/dresses/sandals)
-i'm going to sweat (no fancy fabrics)
-i live in san franicisco (layer, layer, layer)
-i work with lots of sharp, hot, glue covered moving parts (no flowy/drapey/dangly bits)

in the spirit of back to school shopping season, i'm feeling some imaginary back to work shopping (hey! only 9 months in sf for me to find full time work! ugh.) if bookbinding actually paid a livable wage, these are the items i'd be scooping up to wear to work this fall (and beyond) from my four personal horsemen of credit card debt: american apparel, urban outfitters, j.crew and madewell.

omg. you guys. i've found my new favorite store.

the Boy and i went on a walk for our sunday afternoon activity, and decided to point ourselves up clement street, to spend some time in green apple books (best. bookstore. ever.) on our way there a boutique, seedstore, caught our eyes and we decided to pop in... holyomfg it was glorious.

apparently, seedstore is brand spanking new. as in, just opened on wednesday new. i could've bought everything they had (marais oxfords, hasbeens clogs, free people sweaters, vintage, vintage, vintage) but managed to escape only having dropped $30 on a baggu backpack. thank god they didn't have that navajo print sweater in my size, because otherwise i'd be scrambling for rent money in a few days. i was ready to make some very bad decisions in there. i might still. the Boy was also tempted by the wares... pretty sure he's heading back asap to pick up a trovata shirt and sweater. and maybe some shoes.

I have a problem with accumulating bikes. it's a very easy problem to develop, i think. each bike that i have is great at what it's supposed to do: my dutchie beast is amazing for ambling about the city, schlepping groceries, and just generally being gorgeous. my lavender fixie is perfect for city commuting (in chicago, at least) and easy breezy maintenance. my road bike is great for helping me burn billions of calories riding around the north bay. and yet none of these are exactly ideal for getting me around san francisco. dutchie is too heavy and cumbersome. fixie is too, well, fixed (hello, hills) and i have zero intention of ever commuting on my road bike.

considering the financial restrictions that i've mentioned (again and again and again), a fourth bike is not exactly feasible at this point. however, i've gotten a new jobby job (more on this later!) which will require me to start biking again as my transportation to work. i'll be leaning on 'ol fixie for this, but i can already tell that i'll quickly tire of showing up to work a purple, panting mess every day after battling the hills between home and office. so when i was asked to help do some bike research for a friend, it was not surprising when i started to take notes of bikes that i'd like myself as well. and these linus ones... they'd do nicely.

being underemployed these last 9 months (not to mention all the pre-move penny pinching i had to adhere to) has meant i have had to bring my shopping budget to pretty much zero dollars. with the exception of a few ill-advised sprees (cough, urban, cough, madewell) i have made very little additions to my wardrobe in the past year. this of course means i hate everything i own, and getting dressed makes me incredibly cranky.

the Boy and i have a "list" that we refer to with regularity. things we need but can't buy are added to this "list"... we don't actually write any of this down (dear god, the length of it would be terrifying) but we're pretty aware of just how much catching up we have to do once we get something resembling income back up in hurr. side tables, pots and pans, frames, lamps... oh, it makes me dizzy. of course the clothing portion of the list is, for me at least, pretty epic. the examples above are just the few items that came to mind in the one minute i allowed myself to think of covetables, with Lena Corwin's completely amazing living room tossed in for good measure. and yes, lingerie is totally a wish list item for me these days... spend $50 on a bra, or pay the electric bill? sorry, boobies. you lose.

while i wholeheartedly agree with the Sartorialist's sentiment that he posted along with this photo ("this is why biking is good for your legs") i can only dream of looking so impossibly sexy on two wheels. for starters i'd have my matted hair in a ponytail and helmet, not wondrously tousled over my shoulders. and i never got the hang of biking in a skirt while still being, um... ladylike. thirdly, and most importantly, i'd be red faced and dripping in sweat. but three freaking cheers for this girl making it look so damn easy. and hella sexy.

you're one hot and cranky bitch, but i miss you like crazy anyway.

we returned to the midwest recently for a fast and furious reunion. with our old city, with dear friends, with beloved restaurants. oh, and a pretty lovely three day festival named pitchfork was tossed in for good measure also. considering the arctic weather we've been enduring here in sf over the past month, it was nice to feel hot. and boy howdy, i mean really hot. no a/c, no cold water (!!!), with all day everyday spent outside in the 90 degree temps and 80 bajillion percent humidity hot. which of course made coming home to 55 degrees almost refreshing. i feel like the goldilocks of summer weather over here.

anyway, pitchfork (the impetus for our trip) was excellent. lcd soundsystem was a highlight, as well as st. vincent (pictured) and local natives. and big boi. holy nostalgia for high school, batman. that was a fun show. i happened to see annie clark (aka st. vincent) on her way to check out another band shortly before her set. she looked as adorable and fragile and angelic as can be. which made listening to her voice and watching her make her guitar bleed later that much more incredible.

it was a great trip, and i'm looking forward to heading back for another quick visit during the fall. i'm also looking forward to fall for another reason, as it's when (i've been told) the weather around here starts to feel actually... warm. we'll see.

i'm (typically) a simple girl with simple needs. the exception of course being when it comes to anything related to clothing. then i want. it. all.

take homes, for example. my neighborhood (and city in general) is fully stocked with insanely huge mansions and opulent, fabulous houses. these are fun to look at, but the idea of calling one "home" just seems... wrong. give me a cute little three bedroom bungalow and i'd be set for life.

(seriously, if you are in possession of someplace that fits the bill and are feeling generous, caaaaaaall me.)

while watching grey gardens last night, i stopped marveling at the eccentricity of the beales' long enough to take in some of their neighbors gigantic (surely seasonal) beach side homes. the same thought occurred to me seeing those as when i take a walk around my neighborhood: dang, those are pretty and impressive, but just not for me. so it was with serendipitous timing that i saw this 388 sq feet model of lovely efficiency on poppytalk this morning. put it on the right beach, and it's all i'd ever need in a home away from home. clean. simple. perfect.

holy shit balls. i've known of this couch's existence for all of a minute and a half, but i just know we're meant to be together. don't get me wrong, i'm still devoted to my petrie, but if the day ever comes along when the Boy and I have enough space and spare rooms to require more than one couch, i'm bee-lining straight for this gorgeous beast. the passion this discovery stirred up is reminiscent to the uber-obsessive fixation i developed for this couch when i bought my first ever issue of domino. so i guess i can say with some certainty that i'll always be a sucker for a sofa with traditional lines and a bold crazy ass print. want want want.

i enjoyed growing up in arizona, i still enjoy visiting (my people in) arizona, and i also still enjoy the incredible beauty that arizona has to offer. but this shit pisses me off, and it's a pretty concise example of the ugliness growing in that state, right alongside all that beauty. i'm going to be keeping jamie's button represented over there on the right, and hope that sooner rather than later arizona will finally listen, understand what it is about this law that is so abhorrent and fix it.

remember in that last post when i said that i was so good and decided to behave and not buy anything? save money for groceries and whatnot? well, later that night i bought two pairs of toms. in my defense, these two pairs were cheaper than either the pillow or the chair, and with all the walking i do around this city it was about damn time for me to invest in some comfy and cute kicks. they've been in the apartment for less than ten minutes and i couldn't be more in love with them. now if only i had time to take a pair out for a walk today...

on saturday i broke out of my wake-work-sleep routine and walked around the city enjoying the gorgeous day. first i checked out the book arts and printers show (meh) then walked toward the ferry building to get lunch (i was told that the tostadas at primavera would be my best meal all month, and i was not misled). my route from point a to point b took me through north beach, that oh-so-touristy nabe with more italian restaurants than you can shake a (bread)stick at. as a reflex i had just put my head down and was weaving my way through throngs of foreigners with cameras when i happened to glance into what appeared to be a pretty cute shop. i halted, turned around and headed in to check it out. eden & eden, it turns out, is so much more than just a cute shop. that place is my covet list come to life. i'm freaking serious. perfectly edited refurbished vintage furniture (that is priced incredibly reasonably... for sf), amazing jewelry, a small selection of monochromatic clothing, and pillows and paper and... and...

it was good. plus, the shop keeper complimented my coat. kindred spirits, i tell you. i hemmed and hawed over that blah blah blah pillow and a fabulous chair, but in the end decided to behave for once and not splurge when there are groceries to buy and trips to go on. but i will be back just as soon as i can to treat myself to a pillow or five. tourists and italian restaurants be damned.

yesterday i participated in my first bay to breakers, which is an annual 12k race slash city wide excuse to dress up in random costumes and walk through the city with a drink in hand. i crashed my friend brieanne's group, since what few people i do know in this city have fled to the midwest for the better part of the month. i met so many fun girls, paraded myself around town in a tie dye bikini tee with moccasins (emboldened by some seriously strong jello shots), and was home making lunch by noon. true to form i forgot my camera, so all i have to share with you are a few snaps from my phone. i suggest you check out brieanne's blog for proper coverage.

i was terribly, terribly naughty yesterday and made a call to the kind folks at madewell to purchase look #3. in it's entirety. thank you, tax return. i'm surely going to be regretting this purchase once it's time to pay rent again, but sometimes a girl just really needs a new outfit, y'know? the Boy proved to be a real trooper when i pulled him down to look at the screen, pre-purchase, and asked if he thought i could pull the dress off despite "being shorter, not nearly as skinny, and having much bigger boobs" than the model. he actually was able to muster up sincerity when he delivered the "of course, dear" response to such a ridiculously loaded question. thanks, babe.

also, i know they've been swearing up, down and sideways for at least a year that an e-commerce site for madewell is imminent with nothing to show for it. want to place any bets on whether or not we'll see one this summer, which is what that nice lady who took all my money yesterday promised? anyone?

my mom and nana visited the Boy and i for the first time in san francisco this past weekend, and we had a ball showing them around our new city. i swear we did things beside eating and drinking wine, but honestly that might have accounted for at least 75% of our activities. what can i say, the women in my family enjoy their tasty adult beverages and a good cream sauce. a few of the non menu/wine list centric activities (we did them! really!) included a drive up twin peaks, a tour of a ww2 submarine, a trip to the aquarium (which i was conflicted about, i'll admit), an afternoon in wine country, shopping in chinatown and also the alameda flea market. the flea market (which i was visiting for the first time) was a bit of a disappointment, considering the rave reviews i got from anyone whenever it was brought up in conversation. i'm going to blame the absolutely freezing wind and easter holiday for the lameness and lack of vendors, and give it another shot next month. i did manage to walk away with a new pyrex plate and a pair of turquoise earrings, so it wasn't a complete bust. there was also this a-maz-ing steel vanity that the Boy had to physically tear me away from, i wanted it so badly. alas it didn't fit into either our budget or our bedroom, so it was a good thing he was there to provide the willpower. afterward we somehow wound up at the most random yet divine soul food cafe, where we did our best to warm up before taking my mom to the airport. oh, hard knox cafe, you were good. you were real, real good.

it was so nice to have my family around me again, even if only for a few days. i'm easing the downer of seeing them go by looking forward to the next round of visitors at the end of the month. katie and kristi, come on dooooooooown!

yesterday, while lending edyta a hand at the heath ceramics wedding lounge, i became seriously obsessed with the shoes that one of the heath girls was sporting. i'd noticed boat shoes making the fashion rounds, but i'd never really put them in any sort of context within my wardrobe. until now. now i want them real bad like, and i've determined that my closet will be woefully inadequate until i'm able to get a pair. i found these options at free people (while actually looking for this headband thingy, which was sadly nowhere to be found) and i think i like.

i think i like a whole, whole lot.

one of the reasons i've up and abandoned this poor blog once more is because the shopping ban is back in effect, big time. after getting the apartment to a good, livable place, we had to put the brakes on the spending. we've been only moderately successful at this though, since apparently in my brain "shopping" and "entertainment" have disproportionate effects on the wallet. buying jeans are a no-no, but heck yes we should book a fabulous cabin up north for a night (which, in our defense, was 1/2 price. but yeah... still.) can't splurge on a nightstand, but we definitely need a nice bottle of wine while we watch shutter island at the theater. and did i mention the Boy went out and bought the most crazy high end road bike last week? no? well, he did.

oy. so obviously we suck at being unemployed and on a budget. yet there is one recent purchase that i simply will not be apologizing for: as of this morning we're the proud new owners of tickets to see conan o'brien's san francisco stop on his (perfectly named) legally prohibited from being funny on television tour. i will gladly eat nothing but spaghetti for a week to close the gap in the budget that this purchase created. not buying any bottles of wine will probably help, too.
